DIY Poultry Feeder That Saves Feed and Money

IF YOU have chickens, ducks, or guinea hens, you know how quickly feed ends up everywhere except where it's supposed to be.
After constantly filling feeders, cleaning up spilled feed, and watching our birds make a mess, we finally decided to build our own gravity feeder and I honestly wish we'd done it sooner. BONUS - It was less than $40!!
Why We Decided to Build Our Own Poultry Feeder (No building really involved)
We wanted something that would:
Hold a large amount of feed
Keep the feed dry
Reduce waste
Be inexpensive to build
Require less daily maintenance
Instead of buying an expensive pre-made feeder, we made our own in just a few minutes.
What You'll Need

2. 50-Pound Feed Bin
We used a 50-pound feed storage bin, which gives our birds plenty of feed without constantly needing refills.

How We Built It
The installation was surprisingly simple.
We marked where we wanted each feeder port, drilled the holes using the included hole saw, inserted the ports, tightened everything down, and filled the bin with feed.
That's it.
The entire project only took a few minutes.
What We Love About It
Less Feed Waste
One of the biggest improvements has been how much less feed ends up scattered on the ground.
Instead of birds scratching feed everywhere, most of it stays inside the feeder where it belongs.
Keeps Feed Dry
The covered feeder ports help protect the feed from rain and moisture, which means less waste and fresher feed.
Holds Plenty of Feed
Because we used a 50-pound feed bin, we aren't constantly refilling feeders anymore.
It's a huge time saver, especially with a growing flock.
Great for More Than Chickens
Although many people use these for chickens, ours works wonderfully for our ducks and guinea hens too.
If you have a mixed backyard flock, this setup works great.

Absolutely.
For around the cost of a single quality feeder, we were able to build a large-capacity gravity feeder that:
