The Ultimate Homeschool Back-to-School List (That Isn't Curriculum)

This post contains affiliate links. Thanks for supporting our family!

When people think "back-to-school," they usually think curriculum, planners, and long supply lists.

Our homeschool looks a little different.

These are the supplies we actually reach for all year long…the tools that have made learning easier, sparked curiosity, and become part of our everyday rhythm. Whether you're just getting started or you've been homeschooling for years, I hope you find a few new favorites.

Before the Kids Wake Up...

One of my favorite homeschool habits has nothing to do with curriculum.

It's waking up before the kids.

Because somehow one quiet hour with coffee makes me at least 73% more patient. ☕😂

By the time everyone wanders into the kitchen, breakfast is cooking, and they're settling in with our morning basket.

1. Our Morning Rhythm ☀️

If I could recommend just one homeschool essential, it would be a morning basket.

Ours holds our journals, colored pencils, and whatever read-aloud we're enjoying together. While I finish making breakfast, the kids naturally gather around the table to draw, write, or listen to our current book.

It's a simple rhythm, but it's become one of my favorite parts of the day.

  • Our Morning Basket

  • Journals We Love - Big Life Journal (Prompts) , Hardcover Simple Journal

  • Colored Pencils We Use - Comes in a bag with a handle. Easy to grab and go!

2. Learning Outside

Some of our best school days don't happen at the table.. These are the things we almost always bring with us:

  • Nature Journals

  • Kids Binoculars

  • Pocket Microscope

  • Bird Field Guide

  • Tree Identification Guide

  • Insect Explorer

  • Clipboards

3. Creative Supplies

These get used week after week.

  • Watercolor Paint Set

  • Magnetic Tiles

  • Laminator

  • Laminating Sheets

4. Audiobooks

Audiobooks have become one of our favorite homeschool tools.

The kids listen while they're coloring, building with LEGO, riding in the car, or winding down before bed. We've enjoyed so many great stories together this way.

Audible Membership

5. Learning in the Kitchen

Some of our best math lessons happen while baking. Measuring. Doubling recipes. Fractions. Real life is a pretty great teacher.

  • Measuring Cups

  • Kitchen Scale

  • Kid-Safe Knives

  • 6. The Little Extras

These don't fit into one category, but we use them all the time.

  • Window Bird Feeder

  • Kids Rain Boots - Big on bogs boots over here! They last forever!

  • Kids Walkie-Talkies

  • Small Hiking/Camping Chair

  • Soft Reading Blanket

The One Thing You Don't Need to Buy

The best homeschool supply isn't something you can order. It's curiosity. These supplies simply make it easier to follow it.
